'Major and unusual' phone and internet outage hits Mediacom customers across Iowa

Mediacom customers were left with no internet or phone services for the better part of an hour across Iowa Tuesday

And some customers were still experiencing no or poor service into the evening.

Spokesperson Phyllis Peters said there was an electronics failure in a major aggregation router, a network hub

Customers in central, southeast and southwest Iowa had no phone or internet service

The internet interruption started around 2:51 p.m. and was resolved around 3:30 p.m

About 211,000 customers had their service disrupted Tuesday afternoon.

Customers in parts of Missouri also had service issues. Those in and around Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Cedar Falls

Waterloo and the Quad Cities were unaffected, Peters said.

Peters said that the issue was "major and unusual," and that the company has not had one like this before

Mediacom and the electronic manufacturer continue to investigate to find the root cause

They do not believe heat to be the issue at this time.

Customers appeared to have lost services across Iowa again later in the evening. Peters said the electronic issues from earlier emerged again

The situation this time was intermittent and in a narrower area, adding to how unusual it is, Peters said. Engineers continue to work on the issue.
